Zeke stood outside the woodshed, staring at the horizon. Molly wilted from relief. He was still here and he was safe. When she had awakened and not seen him, her mind conjured up a host of bad things that could have happened to him. Her relief changed, though, when she watched his posture. He was not a man viewing a relaxing sunrise. His rigid back told her more than words that he didnât like what he was seeing.
And that worried her a lot.
Zeke had been calm and unruffled most of the time sheâd known him. For him to be concerned, she knew it had to a serious matter. Whenever he had become worried before, there had always been a gut reason. Molly had learned to trust his instincts these past two days.
Climbing around the wood piled in a wooden shield, she marched over to stand at his side. Following his gaze, she looked at the horizon. Colors were blooming on the lightening sky of a new day. As always, she was amazed at the beauty of it all. Something struck her as different, but she could not put her finger on it.
âWhat are we looking at?â she finally asked him.
âWell, on the bright side, the rain finally stopped around an hour ago.â
âJa, I noticed. Why do you not seem happy about that?â Not needing to duck between the drops seemed a gut thing in her mind.
âIt took me a while to realize what I was seeing. I must be more tired than I thought. The colors are wrong.â
Startled, she jerked her head up and took in the gorgeous array of hues again. This time she saw it. Her mouth fell open. The colors were still gorgeous, but looking at it now, she saw a hint of the ominous.
âIâve never seen that green before in a sunrise.â
His mouth firmed. âItâs not supposed to be there. The only time I have ever seen that color in the sky before was when the weather conditions were right for a tornado.â
That would be bad. How did one hide from a tornado without a basement or shelter? Sheâd heard of people being killed when hit by flying debris.
âDo we stay here, under the shelter?â She grimaced. The woodshed had been fine to protect them from the rain, but its suitableness for a tornado shelter was dubious.
âNee. We must find better shelter. Preferably one thatâs not on raised ground. And we have to continue to keep watch for those men.â
âWhat about the abandoned haus?â She pointed at the desolate-looking building.
He shook his head. âThat wonât hold. Look how the side wall is collapsing. Not to mention, itâs probably home to all sorts of creatures, some of whom might bite.â
She frowned. âI wish we had had time for me to look at the databases at the police station. If we had found either of the men who tried to kill me, you would at least know what they look like. As it stands, I am the only one of the two of us who knows.
